# How to Care for Jewellery in Singapore's Hot and Humid Climate

**A material guide to gold silver pearls and mixed jewellery at DORS**

Jewellery care in Singapore starts with knowing what you own. Check the metal, surface finish, gemstones and construction before choosing a cleaning product or storage method. A gold chain, a plated pearl bracelet and a mixed gemstone piece can need different treatment, even when they share a jewellery box.

Follow the maker’s current instructions for the exact piece. If those instructions are missing, unclear or appear to conflict with general advice, ask the brand or a qualified jeweller to clarify before cleaning. The three DORS examples below show which details to look for; the same questions apply to jewellery you already own.

## Before Wearing and Cleaning

The [Gemological Institute of America’s jewellery-care guide](https://www.gia.edu/gia-news-research-tips-caring-jewelry) explains that cosmetics, household chemicals and some cleaning processes can damage jewellery. It also stresses the importance of knowing a gemstone’s treatments.

- Apply perfume and cosmetics before putting on jewellery, keeping sprays away from the pieces.
- Remove jewellery before entering a chlorinated pool or handling household cleaners.
- Keep the receipt, material description and care instructions together so you can check them later.

## Gold and Gemstone Settings

A gold description is only part of the care decision. Ask whether the piece has a plated surface, treated stones or any repairs that affect cleaning. A jeweller should assess the complete item before recommending soaking, steam or ultrasonic cleaning.

The [18K Yellow Gold Natural Diamond Pendant Bracelet PBr91548](https://dors.com.sg/products/foundation-jewellers-18k-yellow-gold-natural-diamond-pendant-bracelet-pbr91548) is listed with 18K yellow gold, natural diamonds and a ruby. It is a useful reminder to read the full specification: the title alone does not name every gemstone. Ask the jeweller about the stones, settings and suitable cleaning method for the complete bracelet.

## Silver and Decorative Finishes

Sterling silver can tarnish, but darker areas can also be intentional decoration. [Tiffany’s silver-care guidance](https://www.tiffany.com/faq/care-repair-faq/how-do-i-care-for-my-sterling-silver/) notes that vigorous cleaning can remove an oxidised finish. Identify the finish before trying to brighten it.

Use only a cleaner or cloth the maker approves for the complete piece. Gold-plated silver should not automatically receive the same treatment as unplated silver. Ask about compatible storage materials too, especially when silver is combined with pearls or other gemstones.

## Pearls and Plated Details

For routine care, [GIA’s pearl-care guidance](https://www.gia.edu/pearl-care-cleaning) recommends gently wiping pearls with a very soft, clean cloth after wear. Pearls should never go into an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Protect them from scratches and avoid direct contact with perfume, hairspray and cosmetics.

### [PEARLY LUSTRE](https://dors.com.sg/collections/pearly-lustre)

The [Top Grade Freshwater Pearl Bracelet WB00267 ORCHID](https://dors.com.sg/products/pearly-lustre-top-grade-freshwater-pearl-bracelet-wb00267-orchid) combines a freshwater pearl with gold-plated sterling silver. Its linked chain and orchid detail show why a pearl accessory needs care that also suits the metal finish. Ask for directions covering the whole bracelet before using a silver cleaner or treated polishing cloth.

## Choose Storage for the Material

Follow [Pearly Lustre’s pearl-care guidance](https://pearlylustre.com/pages/care-of-pearls) by keeping pearls separately in a protective jewellery box or pouch, away from heat and direct sunlight. For strung pearl necklaces and bracelets, the brand recommends storing them flat to avoid stressing the thread.

Pearls can be harmed by dehydration, so “keep every piece as dry as possible” is not a suitable rule for a mixed jewellery collection. Do not extend a desiccant-based silver-storage routine to pearls without advice for the particular piece. Ask the maker how to handle accidental wetting and when a damp cloth is appropriate.

## Mixed Gemstones and Other Materials

A bracelet may combine several stones with ceramic, shell, plating and thread. Check the full material list before borrowing a care method from a plain metal ring or another gemstone. A material name does not tell you whether a stone has been dyed, coated or impregnated.

For example, [GIA’s lapis lazuli care guide](https://www.gia.edu/lapis-lazuli-care-cleaning) describes dye, wax and oil treatments that can affect cleaning choices. Some dyes and wax coatings are vulnerable to solvents or heat. Confirm any treatments before choosing a method for a finished piece.

### [THE ANTECEDENT STORE](https://dors.com.sg/collections/the-antecedent-store)

The [B Porcelain Lapis Lazuli Bracelet](https://dors.com.sg/products/the-antecedant-store-b-porcelain-lapis-lazuli-bracelet) is listed with porcelain, lapis lazuli, turquoise, mother of pearl and 18K gold-plated stainless steel. The different beads and metal details make it a useful example of a piece whose care cannot be decided from one material alone. Request instructions that cover every component, including how they are joined.

## When to Ask a Jeweller

Stop and seek an assessment if a stone moves, a clasp no longer closes securely, a thread is fraying or the finish changes unexpectedly. Ask for the cause and the appropriate repair or cleaning method before treating the surface yourself.

Leave decisions about ultrasonic cleaning to a jewellery professional who can check the stones, treatments and settings. Its vibrations can loosen stones, and some gem materials cannot tolerate the process. For everyday care, keep the instructions specific to the whole piece and have uncertainties resolved before trying a new method.
