AmbassaDORS: The Fabric of Friendship: A Sartorial Tribute to 60 Years of Diplomacy

As part of the SG60 Homegrown campaign, DORS is proud to present AmbassaDORS, a special editorial series that celebrates 60 years of diplomatic friendship and cultural exchange between Singapore and the world. This captivating series spotlights foreign ambassadors based in Singapore—representing countries that formally recognised Singapore’s independence in 1965—as they share their personal reflections on the nation's creative journey and its transformative impact on global design.

Through a mix of short films, social clips, and written stories, AmbassaDORS highlights how Singapore's homegrown design has evolved as a powerful bridge between nations, fostering deeper ties and inspiring new dialogues in the realm of creativity and innovation. The feature delves into each ambassadors unique perspectives, offering rare insights into the symbiotic relationship between diplomacy and design, all within the context of Singapore’s vibrant cultural landscape and personality.

From architecture to fashion, product design to art, AmbassaDORS captures the dynamic role of design as a tool for global connection, collaboration, and understanding. It showcases how Singapore’s creative economy not only reflects its heritage but also opens doors to international collaboration, blending local ingenuity with global influences.

"There is a lot of potential for sharing stories and cultural exchange... we've championed this through our Australian Film Festival with stories from both modern Australian Indigenous cultures and Singapore stories featured in the films of Eric Khoo... the best form of cultural exchange is to get creatives in both countries to work together on joint projects and to share knowledge, experience and create something new together..."

"Diplomacy, at its heart, is about connection, and fashion is a beautiful way to express that.

Wearing local design is a gesture of cultural respect and openness. It allows us to participate in dialogue not through words, but through materials, textures, and silhouettes that carry meaning. As a diplomat, I believe that style is part of soft power, it can build bridges, spark conversations, and honour the cultural fabric of the host country."

"Nature is often part of the inspiration for Danish design and sustainability is key... I see some of the same elements in Singaporean design, but a big difference is the beautifully balanced mix of modern with multicultural aspects.... For fashion in Denmark... [we see] earthy and neutral tones, which we find in the nature surrounding. While colourful clothing and prints [beautifully represent] the tropical island and nature here in Singapore..."

"...culture helps shape our nation’s unique character and heritage and arts and crafts are an important part of that. Preserving and celebrating Māori culture whether through music, performance, food, trading traditions, fashion or fine arts, helps strengthen our wider society. We benefit also by celebrating the heritage and culture of many other ethnic groups that make-up modern New Zealand... and I see the same rich appreciation of culture here in Singapore..."
