A practical guide to bag shapes and ways to carry them
Choosing a bag starts with what you carry and how you want to carry it. Tote, crossbody, shoulder and clutch describe overlapping shapes and carrying styles, rather than a fixed ranking of sizes. These four examples from DORS help you compare capacity, straps and openings before choosing a bag for your daily routine or an occasion.
Tote Bags for a Larger Daily Carry
A tote is a useful starting point when your daily load includes several items, such as a book, water bottle and light layer. Its capacity depends on the actual shape, base and opening. Check whether you prefer a soft bag that folds down or a more structured shape that stands upright.
SINGLAPA
The Singapore A-Z Tote Bag (S$41) carries a colourful watercolour-style alphabet of Singapore scenes. SINGLAPA lists 250 gsm cotton canvas and dimensions of 47 cm long × 40 cm high × 10 cm wide. Consider it for everyday errands when you want a generous fabric bag. Confirm the closure and internal layout on the exact item, then check your belongings against the usable interior.

External dimensions do not establish laptop fit or protection. If carrying a device is the main purpose, measure it with its sleeve and check the bag’s opening, interior space and support.
Crossbody Bags for Hands-Free Carry
A crossbody bag has a strap worn diagonally across the body. It can suit a smaller daily load when you want both hands free. Try the strap at your preferred setting and check where the bag sits while walking, sitting and reaching for the opening.
TOW TOW
The Jill Pill 2.0 (S$245) is a compact option in top-grain Nappa leather, shown here in Popeye Blue. DORS lists a 20 cm width, 13 cm height and 6 cm depth, with a built-in cardholder and six strap-length settings. The stated strap drop is 30–60 cm. It offers shoulder and crossbody ways to carry; test the adjustment range against your height and preferred position.

Strap drop and total strap length are different measurements. A listed drop does not by itself guarantee a comfortable crossbody fit. Check the opening with your phone in its case, keys and any other essentials you intend to carry together.
Shoulder Bags and the Importance of Handle Drop
Shoulder describes how a bag is carried, so it can overlap with a tote or shopper shape. A shoulder bag may be roomy or compact. Check that the handle or strap clears your arm comfortably with the clothes you usually wear, and try it with a realistic load.
DESTI SAINT
The Tassel Shopper - Black (S$235) illustrates that overlap with a roomy shopper shape and leather straps. DORS lists supple leather, tassel detailing, an unlined interior, an internal zipped pocket and a matching pouch. Its listed width is 38 cm and height is 36 cm. Compare the handle drop and usable opening in person before deciding whether this shoulder-carry option suits your routine.

Organisation matters as much as overall size. Decide whether you want a separate pouch for small items or built-in compartments, and check the top closure directly. Compare the bag’s empty weight and the feel of its straps before adding your usual belongings.
Clutches for a Smaller Set of Essentials
A clutch is usually chosen for hand carry and a compact set of belongings. Some designs include a removable chain, allowing another way to wear them. Start with the items you need for the occasion, then check how easily the bag closes once they are inside.
QUINTESSENTIAL
The Handbeaded Foldover Clutch - Dragon (S$199) features a dragon design in glass beads and sequins. DORS lists closed dimensions of 27 cm long × 17 cm high and a removable coated-iron chain measuring 112 cm in total length. It is an option when you want the bag to add pattern to a simple outfit. Confirm the opening and depth with your phone, cardholder and other essentials; the closed outer dimensions cannot guarantee they will all fit.

The removable chain adds a carrying option, but check where it falls on your body. A 112 cm chain length is not the same as a 112 cm strap drop.
Choose by Your Actual Carry
Lay out your essentials, check the bag’s opening and interior, then try the preferred carrying style with those items inside. For device-focused advice, see the work-bag guide; for packing pouches and organising a journey, use the travel guide.
