Pearl types and four jewellery ideas for everyday styling at DORS
Choose pearl jewellery by its material, shape and fit. A short strand can sit at the neckline of a T-shirt, a long pearl drop can frame the face, and a bracelet can bring colour into a simple outfit. Start with a piece the wearer can use with clothes they already own, then check its dimensions and care requirements.
Understand the Material Description
The GIA guide to pearl types distinguishes how pearls form and where they grow. Freshwater describes the growing environment. Cultured pearls form in mollusks with human intervention. Baroque describes an irregular shape, so a pearl can be both freshwater and baroque; the word alone does not establish its origin.
Mother of pearl is the iridescent shell material also known as nacre, illustrated in GIA’s study of abalone shell. When a piece uses this shell material, its description should say mother of pearl. Imitation pearls should also be clearly labelled: a pearl-like surface does not establish that a bead grew in a mollusk. Ask for the exact material description before comparing prices.
Choose a Necklace Length for Your Neckline
PEARLY LUSTRE
The New Yorker Freshwater Pearl Necklace WN00431 (from S$98 per selected layer) uses oval white freshwater pearls with white-gold-plated 925 sterling silver. DORS offers a 4–5 mm inner-layer option at S$98, measuring 37 cm plus a 5 cm extension, and a 6–7 mm outer-layer option at S$128, measuring 40 cm plus a 5 cm extension. These are separate choices in the size selector. Compare the length with a necklace you already wear before deciding on one strand or a layered arrangement.

Use a Longer Pearl Drop as the Focal Point
BOHEME BY VERO
The Dune Earrings Single Pearl (S$250) combine curved gold-coloured forms with a hanging baroque pearl. DORS and the brand list recycled brass with 18K gold plating and cubic zirconia, with an 8 cm drop and 0.8 cm width. That length makes the earrings a visible part of an outfit: try a plain neckline and keep nearby jewellery simple. Baroque describes the pearl’s irregular shape; the listing does not specify its freshwater or saltwater origin.

Bring Colour into a Pearl Bracelet
THE ANTECEDENT STORE
The Dark Green Disc Burmese Jade With Pearl Bracelet (S$401.12) alternates dark green discs with pale pearls and gold-coloured spacers. DORS lists freshwater pearls, jade described as Burmese, and 18K gold-plated stainless steel. The green-and-white combination gives you a colour to pick up in clothing or a bag. Before gifting, ask for the bracelet’s wearable length and compare it with the recipient’s wrist measurement. If gemstone provenance matters to the purchase, request supporting documentation from the seller.

Pair a Pearl Strand with Sculptural Metal
LARA & ELA
The Late Checkout Earrings (S$170) provide a metal-only pairing option for a pearl necklace. The pictured gold-coloured earrings have a curved, reflective surface; DORS and the brand list 18K gold and 925 silver plating options with titanium posts. Each earring is listed at 1.9 cm high, 0.9 cm wide and 5 g. Compare that weight with earrings you already find comfortable. This section is a styling suggestion: the earrings do not add another pearl element to the outfit.

Choose Gifts Around Fit and Familiar Habits
For earrings, check that the recipient wears pierced styles and compare the drop and weight with a familiar pair. For necklaces, check where the stated length sits on their neckline. Rings need the correct size even when a design is adjustable. If you choose a coordinated set, confirm exactly which pieces the price includes and whether the recipient enjoys wearing them together.
Care for the Complete Piece
Follow the maker’s instructions for the exact piece. GIA’s pearl-care guidance recommends wiping pearls with a very soft, clean cloth after wear and keeping them out of ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Apply perfume and cosmetics before putting on pearls, and protect them from scratches and excessive heat.
Store pieces separately in a protective pouch or compartment. Cleaning must also suit the metal finish, other stones and how the piece is assembled. If instructions are missing or conflict, ask the brand or a qualified jeweller before using a cleaner or treated polishing cloth.
