Everyday combinations with pieces already in your wardrobe
Wear batik through the week by pairing a garment you enjoy with familiar basics: a plain T-shirt, tailored trousers, denim or a simple dress. Start with the piece’s length, shape and colours, then build an outfit for the day ahead. These two layers from DORS offer examples for workdays, weekend lunches and dinner plans.
Look at the Textile and the Cut
Batik has a specific textile meaning. National Gallery Singapore’s introduction describes wax-resist dyeing on cloth. When shopping, read the maker’s description of each garment’s fabric and process; a photograph alone cannot establish how it was made. Choose a base colour that you can pick out in the garment, then consider where its hem falls against your trousers or skirt.
A Cropped Jacket for Workdays
STUDIO GYPSIED
The Batik Crop Jacket in Tumbuh Saga Seed Red (S$169) has a standing lapel, an inner pocket and a fully lined cotton construction. Try its cropped cut with high-waisted trousers or a skirt. For a workday, wear it over a plain white top with black trousers and loafers, checking that the shoulder and arm openings allow comfortable movement over your chosen base layer.

For dinner, try the same jacket over a plain column dress with flats or low heels. Keep the dress neckline comfortable beneath the lapel. For a casual lunch, swap to jeans and a simple top; the jacket can remain the main patterned piece in both outfits.
An Open Layer for Weekends
NYANA NYANA
The Reversible Handwoven/Batik Outer (S$109) has a relaxed, reversible shape, an open front and two pockets. Wear it over a plain T-shirt with straight jeans or loose trousers, leaving room for the outer layer to fall freely. Compare both sides before choosing a base colour. DORS notes that the batik patchwork can vary, so check the pattern on the piece you select.

For a creative workday, pair this outer with a plain shirt and dark trousers if the dress code allows. For a weekend outing, use a T-shirt and flat sandals. Try the full outfit while seated as well as standing, and check that the sleeve width and extra layer suit your plans.
Use Proportion to Build More Outfits
The same approach works with batik garments you already own. With wide-leg culottes, try a tucked or shorter top so the waistband is visible. With a straight skirt, try a shirt with a little room through the body. A collared batik shirt can be buttoned with plain trousers or worn open over a T-shirt when its cut allows.
These are starting points for experimenting with fit. Move the hem, change the shoe or repeat one colour in a bag to see what works with your wardrobe. A full matching outfit is also a choice; dress for your preference and the setting.
Follow the Garment’s Own Care Instructions
Read the care label for each piece, including its lining, trims and any reversible construction. Check washing, drying and ironing instructions before the first clean. Studio Gypsied’s product guidance for this jacket includes cold hand washing, but that advice should not be treated as a rule for every batik garment. If the label is missing or differs from the online page, ask the retailer to confirm it before washing.
Kebaya Styles and Occasions
For a garment identified by its maker as a kebaya, read What Is a Kebaya? A Modern Guide to Styles, Fit and Occasions for further context. For a ceremony or cultural gathering, check the invitation and ask the host about expected dress. Everyday outfit suggestions do not establish the requirements of a particular occasion.
